The children and volunteers planted 2,996 U.S. flags in memory of the people killed during the September 11, 2001, terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

“On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we will remember our innocent neighbors who were murdered,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “We will also give thanks to our veterans from the Global War on Terrorism who made so many sacrifices to ensure that these large attacks are never repeated.”

The flag garden is one of three 9/11-related events in Yorktown.

On Saturday there will be a 9/11 Memorial unveiling at 4:30 p.m. at the Shrub Oak Memorial Pavilion, 1130 East Main Street in Shrub Oak. At 8 p.m. on Saturday Yorktown will hold an Illumination Ceremony at Granite Knolls Park, 2975 Stony Street, Mohegan Lake.
