Three Yorktown Sites Featured in County Garden Tour

Westchester Pollinator Garden Tour(July 13, 2022) – Three Yorktown sites are included in this year’s Westchester Pollinator Garden Tour.

More than 50 Westchester County residents will open their gardens at different times on July 24 to showcase pollinator-friendly landscaping practices. From small properties to large estates, the gardens range from those managed with benign neglect to those that are extensively manicured. The tour highlights the varied ways to invite pollinators into yards.

“We all have a role to play in maintaining a healthy environment. Planting native species and flowers that improve habitats for beneficial insects helps keep pests in check, while reducing the need for excessive pesticide and fertilizer applications, which damage our local waterways,” said Supervisor Matt Slater.

The three Yorktown gardens in the tour are:

  • Let it Be, 9 Griffen Place, Yorktown Heights
  • Sandy’s Garden, 2802 Breen Lane, Yorktown Heights
  • Creating a Home for Pollinators, 2352 Hawthorne Drive, Yorktown Heights

Before visiting a specific property, read the garden description carefully, and follow the homeowner’s directions. The garden tour database is posted on the tour’s website.

In 2020, Yorktown officials and the Yorktown Garden Club planted a butterfly sanctuary at Willow Park to make the community more hospitable to pollinators. Volunteers planted milkweed plants that nourish monarch caterpillars, as well as flowering plants that sustain mature monarch butterflies. The butterfly sanctuary is intended to sustain the monarchs as they migrate north and south to their summer and winter habitats in North America.
