Catskill Aqueduct Shutdown Until Mid-January 2022

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has shut down the Catskill Aqueduct for approximately 15 weeks beginning October 2, 2021. This is part of their multi-year Repair & Rehabilitation Program of the Catskill Aqueduct. The closure of the Aqueduct will impact the Northern Westchester Joint Water Works (NWJWW) Catskill Water Treatment Facility for the duration of the shutdown. The NWJWW operates the two Water Filter Treatment Plants that supply treated potable water to the YWD.

During this time all water provided to the residents of the Yorktown Water District will be from the NWJWW's Amawalk Water Treatment Facility. Residents may experience changes in their water with one of Yorktown's two water sources being shut down. As always, the YWD will monitor our water in order to assure water quality standards are maintained. Although adequate capacity will be available to meet our water demand, we will not have a back-up supply in the event of an emergency. For this reason, the NWJWW requests the public conserve water as much as possible.

Kitchawan Water District residents may also notice a difference in their water. The KWD receives it's water from the Town of New Castle. New Castle usually gets it's water from the Ashokan Reservoir via the Catskill Aqueduct. As a result of the Catskill Aqueduct Shutdown, New Castle’s water source will be the New Croton Aqueduct, which draws from the Croton Reservoir.
