Yorktown Approves Herbicide Notification

Yorktown officials have resolved to establish a system to notify residents when herbicides will be applied to town parks and property.

The Yorktown Town Board voted Tuesday to create the notification system so that residents receive information about dates of application, the location to be treated and the products that will be used.

“Our residents deserve full transparency from their government,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “The town uses citrus-based herbicides that are deemed safe. Nonetheless, some residents who use parks and other public spaces may simply want to avoid application zones at their discretion or they may want to arrange their schedules around the applications.”

Yorktown uses citrus-based herbicides that contain vinegar, lemon and orange oils. These types of herbicides have an acidic level sufficient to kill weeds, but they quickly break down and they do not pollute ground water or soil.

The herbicide notification system will use multiple platforms to keep residents informed.

Notices about herbicide application will be placed on the Yorktown Parks and Recreation page on the town’s website. The town will also create an email or text message platform. Residents who want to receive such notifications will be asked to sign up on a webpage that will be developed.
