(September 23, 2022) – Yorktown officials approved a reduced proposal for a solar panel array in the parking lot of the Granite Knolls Sports Complex and additional electric vehicle charging stations at the Jefferson Valley Mall.

On Tuesday, the Town Board approved a site plan for Volta Charging to install four electric vehicle charging stations at the Jefferson Valley Mall. The new charging stations will be free to the public, and they will be supported by advertising displayed on screens mounted to the charging stations.

“Providing new and affordable charging stations for electric vehicles in Yorktown has been a focus of the Town Board,” said Supervisor Matt Slater.  “We applaud the Jefferson Valley Mall for their efforts in attracting Volta to our area and we are excited to have them in our community providing an important service to electric vehicle drivers.”

The charging stations will be installed by Volta Charging, a San Francisco-based vehicle-charging company. The charging kiosks would be about seven-and-a-half feet tall, and they include 27- by 48-inch screens that display advertising similar to screens at gas pumps.

The scaled down version of the Granite Knolls project consists of solar panels mounted on carports over the park’s parking lot. The original proposal by HESP Solar included additional ground-mounted solar panels and solar-power batteries, which were eliminated from the reduced site plan application approved by the Planning Board on Sept 12.

“This project will not only provide clean renewable energy to the grid, but it will allow for needed enhancements of Granite Knolls and other parks in the future that taxpayers will not be asked to pay for. I want to thank the Planning Board for their diligence. This result is exactly why we referred the proposal to them—to ensure that the project is vetted properly,” said Supervisor Slater.

HESP Solar must now obtain a building permit. Construction is expected to begin in November and be completed before the Spring sports season begins.
